Partner Session

Informing site-level management plans for species and nature positive contributions with STAR

25 March 2025 | 14:00 - 15:30 |

Hosted by: IBAT & IUCN

To halt the extinction of species and reduce extinction risk tenfold by 2050, companies must use high-quality, scientifically robust datasets to understand the current state of biodiversity. To build a consensus on what robust State of Nature metrics should be, the Nature Positive Initiative has launched a consultation on ecosystem and species metrics that will be piloted in 2025.

The Species Threat Abatement and Restoration (STAR) metric pinpoints where pressure reduction and restoration efforts can yield the greatest benefits. It enables science-based target setting for species and helps target actions to reduce species extinction risk. The application of STAR for businesses is being piloted by IUCN as part of the Nature Positive Initiative. This session will show how STAR works, share initial lessons from the pilot, and invite participants to test how to use STAR with a case study to launch the discussion, ending off with a Q&A session.

Confirmed Speakers:

Frank Hawkins, Policy and Science Advisor, IUCN
Charlie Butt, Senior Programme Officer, Business and Nature, IUCN
Ed Ellis, Head of IBAT, Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool
